ChatGPT, explained for building products sales. Voice mode in the car, plan reading without the hype, and exactly what A$35 a month buys that free does not. Written for reps and sales managers, not marketers.

Same deal as the Claude guide. The reps I place who use these tools well spend more time selling and less time on admin, and that shows up in their numbers and their careers.

Let's deal with the big one first, because it is the first thing every rep asks.
Can ChatGPT read construction plans? Sort of, and the sort of matters. In a July 2026 benchmark that tested seven AI models on 150 residential floor plans, the best model got basic element identification right 41 per cent of the time. ChatGPT correctly identified doors 12 per cent of the time. Nobody should be making sales calls off a raw AI plan read.
What works is smaller and more useful. Crop a clear section of the plan, upload that, and ask bounded questions. What external wall construction does this detail show. Is there a brick veneer specified here. Where would my category likely be called out on a job like this. Structured questions on small crops, not a 40 sheet upload.
I built a free plan reading prompt that does exactly this, five structured questions and a role aware read with sales angles. It lives on the Specified Select site.
Open the plan reading promptVoice mode on the road. This is the one Claude cannot match. Between site visits, talk through the meeting you are driving to. Ask it to play a sceptical builder and rehearse your open. Dictate your meeting notes on the way out and have it structure them as a CRM entry and a follow up email.
Pre call research that does the legwork. Deep Research runs off on its own, scans the web and comes back with a cited briefing on a builder, developer or architect. On the paid plan you get ten of these a month. Save them for the accounts that matter.
Custom GPTs. Build your own assistant loaded with your price list, datasheets and objection responses. Build it once, use it before every call. Free users can use other people's, paid users can build their own.
The everyday drafting. Follow ups, quote cover notes, objection prep. Fast and reliable.
Free ChatGPT is a demo. A good one, but a demo. Here is the wall, in order of when you will hit it.
About ten messages every five hours, then it quietly drops you to a weaker model for the rest of the morning. Three file uploads a day, which one call prep session will use. No Deep Research at all. No building Custom GPTs. And the voice mode on free is the older, clunkier one, which defeats the point of rehearsing in the car.
| What you get | Free | Plus (A$35 a month) |
|---|---|---|
| Best model | No, and it degrades mid morning | Yes, roughly 160 messages per 3 hours |
| File uploads | About 3 a day | About 80 per 3 hours |
| Deep Research | None | 10 a month |
| Build Custom GPTs | No, use only | Yes |
| Voice mode | Basic, capped | Advanced, near unlimited |
Plus is A$35 a month in Australia, GST included. Same test as always: if it saves you 90 minutes a week, it has paid for itself.
| Build this | Load it with | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Quote assistant | Price list, margin tiers, standard inclusions | Structured quotes and covering emails, flags thin margin |
| Spec reader | Your datasheets, NCC references for your category | Answers clause questions, drafts substitution letters |
| Objection coach | Real objections from the field, your best responses | Role plays the pushback in voice mode while you drive |
Design rule that matters: test it with the exact questions you get in the field before you trust it in front of one.
Before your next meeting with a builder or architect you have not met, paste this.
I sell [YOUR PRODUCT CATEGORY] to [builders / architects / specifiers] in [STATE]. I am meeting [COMPANY NAME] for the first time.
Build me a briefing I can read in five minutes:
What this company does, their typical projects and who their customers are.
Their likely pain points buying from a supplier like me.
Three conversation hooks based on what they are working on.
The two objections I am most likely to hear, with a suggested response for each.
If you are not sure about something, say so rather than guessing.More prompts along these lines in meeting prep.
The Business plan runs about A$33 to A$41 a seat depending on billing. Two reasons it beats a pile of individual Plus accounts. Your team's conversations are not used for model training, which is the answer to the pricing and client data question. And you can build one Custom GPT, your spec reader or objection coach, and share it with the whole team, so nobody starts from scratch.
Rollout in one paragraph. One shared Custom GPT first, a monthly what worked session, and let the results recruit the sceptics.
Short version. ChatGPT wins in the car and on images: voice mode, plan crops, quick everyday drafting. Claude wins at the desk: long specs, tenders, and proposals that read like you wrote them. They cost about the same. Plenty of reps run both and let each do what it is best at.
Read the Claude guideIf you use it most days, yes. Free caps you at about ten messages every five hours and three file uploads a day, which one serious call prep session will burn. Plus is A$35 a month in Australia.
Not reliably from a raw upload. Benchmarks in 2026 showed even the best models misread plans most of the time. Small cropped sections with specific questions work. Whole plan sets do not.
A version of ChatGPT you load with your own price list, datasheets and objection responses. No coding. If you answer the same product questions every week, you want one.
On free and Plus, assume your conversations may be used for training unless you change your settings. The Business plan turns that off by default, which is why teams should use it.
Both are A$35 or so a month and they are good at different halves of the job. ChatGPT for voice, plan crops and speed. Claude for long documents and technical writing. The Claude guide on this site covers the other half.
