AI Prompts for Building Products Sales
Know what's being built before your competitor does.
Updated July 2026
Most building products reps find out about projects too late. The spec's already locked. The competitor's already in. The architect's already committed.
These prompts help you get ahead. Research what's in planning, what's in construction, and where the opportunities are in your territory. Run them on a Monday morning and you've got a week's worth of leads before your first site visit.
When to use it: Monday morning. Weekly habit. Run it fresh each week to catch new projects entering planning.
I'm a sales rep covering [territory, e.g. Melbourne's western suburbs / all of metropolitan Sydney / South East Queensland].
I sell [product category] to [customer type, e.g. architects, commercial builders, developers].
Find the biggest commercial and residential projects currently in planning or early construction in my territory. For each project, give me: project name, location, estimated value, developer or builder (if known), project type, and expected timeline.
Focus on projects where [your product category] would typically be specified.Best tool: Perplexity. It searches live data and gives you sourced results. Use deep research mode for a more thorough scan.
When to use it: Monthly or quarterly. Infrastructure projects move slowly but they're massive pipelines once they start.
What are the major infrastructure projects currently underway or in planning in [state, e.g. Victoria]?
Focus on projects over $50m. For each one, give me: project name, location, value, current stage (planning/approved/under construction), expected completion, and the government body or developer behind it.
Then tell me which building product categories would be needed for each project.Best tool: Perplexity with deep research mode. It'll pull from government infrastructure sites, budget announcements, and project trackers.
When to use it: Fortnightly. DAs are public information but nobody has time to trawl through council websites. Let AI do it.
Search for recent development applications lodged with [council name, e.g. City of Melbourne / Parramatta City Council / Brisbane City Council] in the last 90 days.
Focus on commercial, multi-residential, and mixed-use projects. For each DA, give me: address, project description, estimated value, applicant/developer, and current status.
Highlight any projects that would require [your product category].Best tool: Perplexity. Some councils publish DA data more accessibly than others. Cross-reference with Cordell or PlanTracker if you have access.
When to use it: Before visiting a key account. Walk in knowing what's being built on their doorstep.
I have a key account at [address/suburb]. What construction projects are currently in planning or under construction within a 5km radius?
Include residential, commercial, and mixed-use developments. For each one, give me the project name, address, type, and estimated value.Best tool: Perplexity.
Pro tip
AI won't replace Cordell, PlanTracker, or BCI. If your company subscribes to a construction database, use it. But these prompts give you a free starting point that most reps aren't using at all. Something is better than nothing, and nothing is what most people are doing.
