Architectural & Design (A&D)
I recruit sales talent for the A&D channel across Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane. That means the people who sell into architects, interior designers and specifiers: specification managers, field-based A&D reps and showroom leads. This is the product side of A&D, not studio hires. If you're after design-studio recruitment, this isn't your page.
A&D crosses over with my interiors work, and plenty of the reps I place sit in both worlds. The difference is the angle. The Interiors page covers the product category, flooring, surfaces, joinery, kitchens and bathrooms. This page covers the channel, the roles whose job is getting a product written into the spec, whatever that product is. Envelope, interiors, lighting, the spec conversation works the same way.
What is an A&D sales role?
An A&D sales role sells building or interior products into architects, interior designers and specifiers, working to get the product written into the spec before it reaches a builder or contractor. The role sits across three formats depending on the company: field-based A&D reps who visit studios and present ranges, specification managers who own the technical relationship with the design community, and showroom or studio-based reps who run the physical sample library and walk-in trade. Some A&D roles overlap with architectural lighting, where the specifier relationship runs through both the lighting designer and the electrical consultant, and those briefs usually sit alongside my lighting sales recruitment work.
Who hires A&D sales talent in Australia?
Manufacturers and importers of interior finishes, joinery products, surfaces, fixtures and architectural lighting hire directly into A&D. So do distributors running their own showroom presence in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane. The buyer is almost always the same person on the other side of the desk: an interior designer or architect deciding what goes on the plan, well before a builder ever sees a quote.
Why is A&D sales talent hard to hold?
Three patterns come up in A&D hiring conversations, and none of them are about money first. The first is a genuine shortage of mid-level talent, particularly in Brisbane and Sydney, where candidates with real specification experience field multiple offers within days of going to market. The second is specification leakage: a rep gets the product onto the plan, then loses it at the contractor stage to a cheaper substitute, and the frustration of winning the spec but losing the sale wears good reps down over time. The third is a measurement mismatch that's specific to the channel. Spec work pays off in twelve to eighteen months, but plenty of A&D reps are managed on monthly numbers, and the ones with the best long-cycle relationships are exactly the ones who leave when the scoreboard doesn't fit the job.
I've written about this in more detail in Why Your Best A&D Reps Are Leaving.
What do A&D and specification sales salaries look like?
Base salaries in the channel scale with seniority. A&D sales reps typically sit at $80,000 to $100,000+ base, BDMs at $100,000 to $130,000, specification managers at $120,000 to $140,000, and national-level roles at $130,000 to $160,000. All of these sit on top of superannuation, plus a car or car allowance on top (commonly $15,000 to $25,000, sometimes with a fuel card or etag added), quoted separately rather than bundled into one headline number. For a full breakdown of how these packages are built, see the Building Products Sales Salary Guide.
How I recruit A&D sales talent
I only work in building products and the A&D channel, so I'm not learning this market on your brief. I've mapped the A&D candidate pool across Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane, including the mid-level specification talent that's hardest to find. Every candidate I put forward gets honest feedback and I won't push someone into a role that's wrong for them, which is why clients come back. If you're hiring a spec manager, A&D rep or showroom lead, get in touch and I'll tell you straight away whether I know who you need.
Ranges vary by city, product complexity and whether the role is field, showroom or national. Car or car allowance is typically quoted on top.
